Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Vilnius Airport was forced to close for several hours when numerous of them drifted across the national airspace.
Aviation Problems
The operational halt led to 30 flight cancellations impacting thousands of passengers, with airport representatives alerting that additional delays could occur throughout Monday.
Border Security Response
Border security stated that multiple atmospheric balloons were observed crossing into Lithuania from neighboring Belarus, with two of which ending up directly over the main terminal.
Approximately 14 of the weather balloons deployed throughout the weekend passed through the Vilnius area, which is the location of Lithuania's primary metropolis and adjacent to the border with Belarus.
Contraband Recovery
A minimum of 11 balloons containing eighteen thousand packages of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to law enforcement authorities.
International Illegal Trade
Although causing problems, officials emphasized that "Weather devices carrying illegal goods - cigarettes from Belarus - are nothing new in Lithuania, Latvia, and Poland."
So far this year, 544 balloons have been observed infiltrating Lithuania from Belarus, while approximately 966 had been noted during the prior year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Podlaskie region, which also borders Belarus, has documented over 100 cases in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Illegal Transport Methods
Regarding inquiries concerning why smugglers utilize a method that is highly susceptible to weather elements rather than simpler to operate drones, officials clarified that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by smugglers - they are more economical than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Border Protection Aims
Representatives further stated that "The goal of law enforcement is to capture the greatest possible volumes of smuggled items and to arrest masterminds and perpetrators so that these practices become unprofitable and present no risk to passenger aircraft."
International Concerns
These airspace violations occur during a period of growing anxiety in Europe following multiple unmanned aircraft violations that have resulted in flight interruptions across the region.
Parallel situations in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to speed up talks about strengthening air defences throughout European airspace.
