Approximately 50 vehicles have been smeared with what seems to be human bodily fluid in the German municipality of Hanau in proximity to Frankfurt, as reported by authorities.
Vehicles, walls and postal boxes were defaced, sometimes with Nazi symbols, they stated in a release.
Police say they were alerted during the night on Wednesday evening, when a man observed that a vehicle in the Lamboy district of Hanau had been marked with a reddish substance.
The liquid had been applied in the form of a swastika, they reported.
Police then located multiple other marked automobiles and house walls in the nearby vicinity.
Swastikas are banned in Germany under laws banning the visible presentation of Nazi symbols.
Police state preliminary tests indicate the fluid was most likely human blood.
"At present there remains no indication as to its source; officials are presently not cognizant of any harm in connection with the occurrence," they stated.
City officials said they were attempting "to resolve the mystery" and have appealed to the community for details.
An important political figure stated the incident left him speechless and had to be addressed rapidly.
"This incident strikes at the very heart of Hanau and reawakens the pain of the extremist terrorist attack in 2020," he posted on social media, recalling the death of nine people by a assailant targeting residents of migrant background in five years prior.
